He learned a new craft in his 40's, he was past 50 when his first novel was published. And when his books sold, and Hollywood held out it's arms, he accepted the embrace but didn't get smothered in it. Into the adventures of Philip Marlowe he put all the witty remarks he never made, the violent adventures he would probably have shrunk from, the lovely girls he didn't know. He always wanted to be judged by the standards of art, and knew how often he fell short of them."

En dépit de ses travers et de ses lubies, il y avait beaucoup de choses admirables chez Raymond Chandler, tant chez l'homme que chez l'écrivain. La quarantaine le vit aborder un art nouveau et son premier roman fut publié la cinquantaine bien entamée. 
Lorsque ses livres se mirent à être vendus et qu'Hollywood lui ouvrit grand les bras, il en accepta l'étreinte sans s'y abandonner.
Il demeura fasciné par le son, le rythme des mots et l'art de les assembler. Il prenait son affaire très au sérieux, ce qui amena les autres à en faire autant à son égard.
On a aujourd'hui en Europe des étudiants qui écrivent des thèses sur les œuvres comparées d' Hammett et de Chandler. (...)
À l'intérieur du cadre qu'il s'était fixé, Chandler devint vraiment un bon écrivain. Il avait placé dans les aventures de Philip Marlowe tous les mots d'esprit qu'il s'était interdit, - aventures violentes auxquelles il aurait probablement échappé -, les belles filles qu'il n'avait jamais eu.
Et avait toujours souhaité être jugé selon des canons artistiques, tout en sachant à quel point il en était éloigné.
